💎 Why It's a Must-See: The Story in a Nutshell
For centuries, it was believed the temple's pagoda housed a sacred relic. In 1987, archaeologists excavating the collapsed pagoda base made a discovery: a Tang Dynasty underground palace, completely untouched for 1,113 years.
Inside, they found over 2,400 Tang Dynasty national treasures—silks, gold and silverware, and exquisite porcelain. The most important find was a set of four nested jeweled caskets, the innermost containing a finger bone relic. Historical records confirmed this as the genuine finger bone relic of Sakyamuni Buddha, gifted to the temple by Tang emperors. It is the highest-grade, best-documented Buddhist relic in the world.
